Incorporation – Good or Bad?

Incorporation – Good or Bad?

Sorrento-Blind Bay Incorporation Study
Discussion Panel

Why is this important to you? Well, it may not be, but if you’re interested in learning more about incorporation (maybe Scotch Creek?), this would be valuable to sit in on. On the panel will be a number of past and current mayors from a variety of small towns who have incorporated in the last 10 years. They will be discussing the pros and cons of incorporating.

This Saturday January 29, 2022 – 1:00pm to 3:30pm
Virtual attendance Only

In making the decision to cancel the in-person components of the events, it was decided the safety of the public, staff and committee members must be the top priority. We encourage all residents to join the meetings online. The public will be able to participate in the live-streamed sessions by asking questions or making observations.

Panelists from other small communities will speak about their experience with incorporation. Recordings will be posted after each event.

What about Scotch Creek?

A couple of years ago there was great interest in possibly incorporating Scotch Creek. We’re still on that path to an incorporation study but it is a few years away. It seems the Province is not that interested in small communities travelling down that road. In order to get there we need a number of initial studies including – The Housing Study that we’re just completing, then the Governance Study that we have funding for but due to staff pressures at the CSRD and the fall municipal election won’t get started until 2023. Then depending on the results of that study there may be further studies… The South Shuswap took 6 years to get to the incorporation study, and due to Covid, that study has taken two years.

When we get to the stage where an incorporation study for Scotch Creek happens, we’ll have a panel like this to assist us getting the answers we’ll need to make an informed decision.

In the meantime, we can get some primo information from the South Shuswap experience.
